Leather Care Guide

From iconic jackets and midi skirts to shirts and trainers, leather is one of those wardrobe staples you can rely on season after season. It’s strong, durable and only gets better with age, as long as you show it some love. If you’re wondering how to look after your favourite leather items or how to wash and store your leather garments, we’ve got you covered. Our guide makes looking after your leather goods simple.
Like suede, leather clothing needs some TLC to keep it’s shape and shine. First rule: avoid rainy days, as water can damage the material. Beyond that, our cleaning, conditioning and storing tips below will help you do the rest.
How to properly care for leather clothing?

Can you put leather clothes in the washing machine?

It’s best not to. Washing machines, detergents and water can cause damage that’s hard to undo. As a general rule, steer clear of dry cleaning leather items too.

Faux leather or synthetic leather is more durable when it comes to washing, but when it comes to real leather, softer methods that won’t damage the fibres are the way to go.

How to dry leather

Once cleaned, pat dry your leather garments with a towel and let them air naturally. Lay leather jackets flat and keep them away from direct heat or sunlight to avoid fading.

How to condition leather

Once cleaned and dry, apply a trusted leather conditioner with a soft cloth to keep the leather supple and prevent cracking. Let it absorb into the fibres, then buff gently with a clean cloth. We recommend conditioning your leathers every 3-6 months to keep them looking their best. If you wear it more often – opt for 3 months.

How to clean leather clothing

Leather items look better when they’re maintained well. A quick weekly dust or wipe keeps fibres smooth. If you’re trying to treat a stain or spillage, it’s best to act fast so it doesn’t seep too deep into the leather.

Step 1 - Check the care label

  • Follow any specific guidance, brands often tailor instructions to that garment

Step 2 - Dust & surface clean

  •  Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth to sweep away dust and dirt, following the direction of the grain

Step 3 - Spot clean any stains

  • Mix a mild soap (baby shampoo or washing up liquid works) with lukewarm water
  • Dampen a cloth, wring it out and gently dab the mark
  • Don’t soak the leather as that’s how it loses shape

Step 4 -  Wipe off any soap

  • Use a separate damp cloth, dampened with just water, and wipe away any residue

How to store leather clothing

Use broad, wide or padded hangers for leather jackets and coats to help them keep their shape.

When storing your leathers long-term, keep them in a breathable fabric garment bag, dust-free but able to breathe. Always clean and condition first, so it comes out supple and ready to wear.

Are you supposed to oil leather jackets?

Yes – but only with oils made specifically for leather. It can help condition the leather and prevent the fibres from cracking and drying. Not only does it keep the leather feeling soft and supple, it also prevents any peeling too.

How to look after leather

Giving your leather items time to breathe in between wears can help them refresh before wearing again. Keep your leather items stored in a cool and dry area, out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.

Use natural ingredients and soaps, avoiding harsh chemicals that are too aggressive for delicate fibres.

Never wash your leather items in a washing machine – spot clean any stains gently, and if a stain is stubborn, hand it over to a specialist cleaner who’s experienced with working with leather.
