Wool Clothing Care Guide

From fluffy mohair to soft-to-touch cashmere, wool is a wardrobe hero that deserves extra love. With the right steps and care, it’ll keep you feeling cosy for years to come. Whether you’re wondering how to care for wool jumpers or looking for tips on how to store your wool items in the winter months, we’ve got you covered.

How to wash wool

Whether it’s a 100% wool item or a soft wool-blend, washing wool doesn’t have to be difficult.

Wool is breathable, which means it doesn’t need constant washing. Simply air out your wool jumpers or cardigans after each wear as this will help the natural fibres release most odours naturally.

This also keeps them fresh before storing away for the warmer months. Got a stain? Spot-clean straight away to stop it setting and save yourself an unnecessary wash.

You can wash a number of our wool items at home, by hand or in a machine. For 100% wool items, such as wool socks or jumpers, we recommend a gentle hand wash. Once clean, try to avoid wringing the fabric when drying, as this can alter the shape. High heat can cause shrinkage, even for blended garments, so always opt for a delicate cycle on a lower temperature. Choose a mild detergent, such as Woolite, for any delicates to keep them feeling soft and supple. When it comes to washing wool coats and jackets, we recommend leaving them with a trusted dry cleaner who can closely follow the care label instructions.

If you need to wash your wool, we recommend doing so gently. e.g no scrubbing or wringing. Treat any marks with care and remember, a light touch goes a long way.

How to keep wool in good condition?
How to prevent pilling

Natural fibres like wool can pill more than synthetic ones, but don’t worry as this is normal and they can be easily removed with a wool comb or fabric shaver.Pills might appear first in places like your sleeves, underarms or wherever your bag strap rubs against. Investing in a fabric comb or razor will remove pills and have your pieces looking as good as new in no time. Gently comb or shave the pills away, and remember, pilling should decrease over time.

 Protect your pieces

During the warmer months, air or wash your wool clothing and wrap in a pillowcase to deter moths. For long-term storage, go airtight, this is sure to keep your woollens securely stored and moth-free.

Caring for merino wool

Merino is lighter, softer and easier to wear year-round, but it still needs care. Always check the care label instructions before attempting to wash, then turn inside out, wash by hand with lukewarm water or use a delicate machine cycle, then dry flat to help the item keep its shape.

 How to dry wool

There are a few easy steps to follow when it comes to drying your favourite wool garments.

Heat can shrink and misshape wool items so it’s best to skip the tumble dryer. Not only is this kinder on the fabric and helps preserve the quality of your wool garment, it also reduces your laundry emissions too.

After washing, lay your woollen knits out flat to dry. This will help them retain their desired shape, as hanging them up can cause unwanted stretching and re-shaping (and pointy shoulders… an unintentional look). More structured items such as wool coats and jackets are fine to be hung up, ideally out of direct sunlight. This will help retain their shape and colour for future seasons – perfect for effortless dressing.

Hanging your knits can stretch and distort their shape over time, so it’s best to store them folded on shelves or in drawers to maintain their shape. Wardrobe dividers are great for organising by thickness, colour, or occasion.

Wool garments can stain easily so it can be tempting to get them dry cleaned. However, we don’t feel it is necessary to dry clean 100% wool unless it’s a jacket or a wool coat and you want to leave it in the hands of a professional.

For other garments, simply follow the care label instructions on the garment and wash and dry as advised.
