THIS is how to wear black in the summer...
Wearing black in the summer – and not looking like you’re off to a funeral – is a talent known only by few, including nuns, the Night’s Watch and Victoria Beckham. For everyone else, clinging to a darker wardrobe throughout the warmer season is seen as some sort of sartorial sin, as dark as the material itself, but why...?
Black is a fashionista’s BFF for several reasons; it’s flattering on the body, easy to coordinate as there aren’t many variations on the shade, and if you do so happen to spill that morning Americano all over yourself - third-degree burns aside - no one else will ever know. To that effect, the Nobody’s Child team are all for wearing black throughout the summer – as our new-in section will show! - and with the following style tips and tricks, you never need to dread June and the pressure to suddenly dress like Joseph in his technicoloured dream coat, again!
Break the Black Up
Granted, if you’re going to do the all-black thing by wearing a floor-skimming black maxi dress, with full length sleeves and a high rise collar, don’t be surprised to find Gomez Addams kissing his way up your arm. Instead, break up the black with areas of skin; for an off-duty vibe, look to a bodysuit and black midi skirt combo, paired with Chelsea boots and a floppy hat.
For something a little more office-appropriate, wide leg culottes are the perfect alternative to those staple skinny jeans, and look great with a crop top. Finish the look with heels, and if you do feel the need for a splash of colour, then a red lip works wonders.
Stay cool with airy styles
Better accept it now. If you’re sticking with an all-black palette over summer, then you’d best be able to take the heat. Stick with loosely tailored styles that welcome a little air as you move. Our Cross-Front Cami Top drapes over the body for a little ventilation, and looks great with this black Pleated Midi Dress, which has been crafted from a lightweight breathable fabric.
For more of a sportsluxe take on the all black trend, how about our oversized black Jersey Tee Dress? Once again, its relaxed silhouette makes it perfect for summer, so simply slip-on a pair of canvas sneakers and you’re good to hit the streets.
Dial up the detail
Without punchy prints and vibrant colours to jazz up an outfit, an all-black get-up can sometimes look a little nondescript. To avoid this, look to statement detail to provide various vocal points. Our black Bardot Top sits elegantly off-the-shoulder and is accented with a beautiful eye-catching crochet trim neckline.
In terms of a day-to-day fashion staple, this black Cami Top works perfectly with shorts, a skirt or even skinny jeans, while the exaggerated tie-shoulder straps add just the right amount of edge.
