Met Gala-ctic: Stars Shine at Last Night’s Met Ball
Last night saw New York glow that little bit brighter as stars gathered for the annual Met Gala, hosted by Anna Wintour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Though regularly referred to as the Oscars of the East Cost, the Met’s Costume Institute Benefit differs from its Hollywood equivalent in one particularly dazzling way – its eccentric dress code.
Each year, despite the fact that guests have already forked out an astonishing £20k for their ticket, to add insult to injury, they’re then told what to wear….in a manner of speaking. From Punk to Goddesses, China to Superheroes, each gala is defined by a theme, and this year saw the likes of Swifty, Kimke and the Jenner sisters gleaming in metallic panelled dresses that looked like they’d been shipped straight from the future.
The topic? ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’, and it’s safe to say that a-listers relished the opportunity to dress like something from their favourite sci-fi films. Co-hosting the event, Taylor Swift led by example in a Louis Vuitton mini-dress, constructed in a shimmering snakeskin texture, complete with cutaway sections and contrasting leather detail. She vamped up the design with gothic inspired makeup, including a blood red lip, and finished the look with futuristic gladiator-like stiletto heels.
Rita Ora’s floor trailing Vera Wang dress was composed entirely of silver feathers, while pop princess, Katy Perry wore a full length Prada gown, embellished with all manner of gilded adornments, including keys, coins, jewels and leaves. Never one to shy away from dramatics, Lady Gaga rose to the occasion in iridescent platform boots, which perfectly matched her jewel encrusted body suit and circuit board-like jacket. But our personal fave has to be Kylie Jenner in her absolutely stunning, form-hugging, silver bodycon dress.
As for the couples that stole the show, Gigi sizzled in a smokey floor-skimming dress, complete with an interconnected bodice and choker made from mirror-like scales, while Zayn complemented her with the addition of a set of robotic looking arms to his otherwise traditional tuxedo. Kim Kardashian shimmered in her Balmain creation – imagine something in-between a traditional evening dress and a suit of armour from outer space, to which hubby, Kanye West, stuck with his usual ripped jeans and t-shirt get-up, worn underneath a denim jacket that looked like it had taken a lengthy dip in liquid nitrogen.
