Styling Patterns: How to Find Your Favourite Prints

From classic gingham styles to the perfect floral dress, and all the way to the wild animal print, at Nobody’s Child, we’re here for every kind of print and pattern, and if you ask us, there’s no better time to show them off than summer. We surveyed 1,000 UK women to find out their thoughts about different prints, and found that some are finding it difficult to style them into their wardrobe, no matter how much they really want to. We've shared our top tips for getting started on your print and pattern journey, perfect for the summer season or for your next holiday shop.
Just 1 in 8 would say prints are ‘their style’

Turns out, we’re a nation of neutral-lovers, with 49% calling their style pared-back, 29% going colourful and 20% loving oversized.

We love a neutral fit as much as the next person, but even though only 1 in 8 say prints are their thing, nearly 2 in 5 (38%) want more of them.

A further 58% also said they would like to introduce more statement pieces into their wardrobe.

So, what’s holding us back from patterned outfits?

37% of UK women area scared of wearing bold colours and prints.

And we get it, prints can be overwhelming to style, especially when they include plenty of elements and colour. In fact, almost two-fifths (39%) say that they don’t know how to mix and match patterns together or pull them off as a co-ord moment.

Nearly half (48%) of UK women feel that patterns are too trendy and go out of style too quickly, but here’s the thing – if you love it, it’s timeless

What are our favourite prints?

Patterns we’re most confident wearing? Florals, stripes and polka dots come out on top.

Both versatile prints, a polka dot dress or striped dress can bring a burst of playfulness to your wardrobe, making them perfect prints for the summer months, for everything from work to weekends to those last-minute beach trips.

It appears not all patterns are thought of equally though. Houndstooth, gingham and paisley? Still gorgeous, just the ones women find a little trickier to style.

How can we brighten up our wardrobes and try out new prints?

For those who want to incorporate more prints into their wardrobes, there are some simple ways to explore new styles. Whether it’s a polka dot moment or you wear an animal-print dress, here are our top tips on experimenting with pattern.

How do I start wearing more prints and patterns?

Start with one standout piece and keep the rest simple: a gingham blouse with a pair of classic denim jeans or rather a pair of tailored trousers, outfit sorted.Try accessories –like scarves, and bandanas, and tote bags. They’re easy wins and a great way to add in a pop of prints like floral, animal and paisley to a simple outfit.

What print is easiest to style?

Any print can work for everyone, depending on your style. Don’t be afraid to try things out! See what you wear as a chance to experiment and express yourself, so what will work for you may not be someone else’s favourite print to wear.

Not sure where to begin? Start with florals – everyone loves a floral. There are so many different types of floral prints and placements, you can have a play around and see what works for you.

Polka dots and stripes are also timeless print, so can be a good place to start. Then maybe try out  gingham or a checked dress - once you’re feeling brave.

How do I mix and match prints?

Can you mix patterns? Absolutely. For more minimal dressers, a key tip when mixing and matching prints is to keep them in the same colour family so you don’t overwhelm an outfit. For example, if you mix animal and stripes, stick to the same browns and neutral tones to keep everything cohesive. Feeling bold?Try clashing colours and styles of prints – mix an orange tiger print with a pair of blue striped trousers – that’s a statement.

How to wear leopard print?

Leopard print is your shortcut to an outfit with edge. It’s a great one to style mixed back with denim across jeans, jackets and skirts. Animal print is also fantastic worn on its own as a statement dress, style it with heels and a blazer, or tone it down with trainers.

How to style gingham?

Gingham’s a classic and always looks great in monochrome outfits. Pair a gingham dress with black and white simple styling and you’re set. If you’re wanting to make more of a statement, you can throw in a bright coloured shoe to mix up an outfit. While we love gingham dresses, gingham also works fantastically with flowy skirts, denim and your favourite feminine footwear.
