Down-the-aisle style: How to choose a bridesmaid dress

When it comes to planning a wedding, there are so many things to think about. And we know you have a Pinterest board full of inspo for every element, including bridesmaid dresses. Beyond your own wedding dress, what your bridal party wears is a big moment. After all, your bridesmaids aren’t just any wedding guest; they’re the Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda to your Carrie.

Of course, you want your besties to feel their best on your wedding day too, so at Nobody’s Child, we’ve asked previous bridesmaids how they felt about their last bridesmaid dress to see what soon-to-be-brides should be thinking of.

Who actually chooses the bridesmaid dress?

Traditionally, the bride takes the lead (and often pays for bridesmaid dresses) but that doesn’t always mean it’s a one-way decision. While only 16% of bridesmaids got to pick their own dress last time, there’s a shift towards collaboration – because let’s be honest, a happy bridal party shines through the photos.

That being said, some bridesmaids have ended up paying for a dress they didn’t choose (25%), so it’s always worth being clear on expectations.

The good news? Most (65%) said they liked their bridesmaid's dress. While not everyone felt their bridesmaid dress matched their personal style (49%) or felt the bridesmaids’ dresses flattered the whole group (52%), it just goes to show that a little flexibility and style options can go a long way.

Re-wearing a bridesmaid dress

With bridesmaid dresses, it turns out that seven in ten (70%) haven’t worn their bridesmaid dress again and 58% say they don’t plan to. But it doesn’t need to be that way. When bridesmaids get to choose their own bridesmaid dress, they’re twice as likely to wear it again (48% vs 24%). So it’s worth thinking beyond traditional bridesmaid dresses and look at the non-bridal section too, as people are twice as likely to find a dress there (48% vs 22%). Looking at occasion dresses opens up a world of potential and gives them more of a chance to be worn again (and again and again).

How to choose a bridesmaid dress

So, how can soon-to-be-brides choose bridesmaid dresses that not only suit their wedding’s theme, but also one their besties will love? Mismatched bridesmaid dresses could be the answer.

There are three ways you can mix and match bridesmaid dresses:

Same dress. Different colours.

This is simple – you find a style of dress and give your bridesmaid a colour palette that they can choose from, such as navy blue, olive green or even soft pink bridesmaid dresses. This means you get a cohesive look across your bridal party, while your bridesmaids can choose the colour that suits them best.

Same colour. Different dress.

If you have a certain colour you want your bridesmaids to wear (for instance, you may go for a floral green bridesmaid dresses) you can have them stick to this colour with each wearing different styles and silhouettes.

This is a perfect way to make sure everyone has a dress style that suits them and they feel confident in.

Different everything

If you’re happy to have a more unique bridal party, you can even let them have total freedom over colours, styles and fabrics of their bridesmaid dress . Just share a moodboard or colour palette to keep things feeling cohesive.

For example, you may say you want cool tones for your wedding – for this, you could let people pick out purples, greens and blue bridesmaid dresses and play around with different hues and shades.Shared details like accessories or similar hemlines can pull everything together beautifully.

Overall? Communication is key

If you’re set on all of your friends wearing the same dress, just talk it through first.

Everyone’s body, style, needs and wants are different. From tall to  petite, fitted or flowy, everyone has a preference, and your group chat is your best friend.

It’s always best to have open conversations so you’re all clear on what everyone would like – this can help you find the best bridesmaid dresses for them and be sure they find a look they actually love.

Here at Nobody’s Child, we have a range of elegant and stylish bridesmaid dresses in a variety of patterns and colours to suit any bridal party.
