Heading Somewhere Sunny? Here Are the Holiday Outfits to Pack

Everything that makes it into a holiday suitcase comes with a plan in mind: the sunrise swim, the afternoon spent stretched out by the sea, the old-town wander and the dinner reservation as the sun goes down. Assuming they all have to share one case, every piece needs to earn its place. Here are the holiday outfit ideas that will save you time (and suitcase space).

The Wear-Everywhere Sundress

Ever packed ten outfits, only to wear the same dress for five days? That’s exactly the kind of summer dress we’re looking for.

Midi or maxi, choose lightweight cottons, cotton-linen blends and relaxed silhouettes that feel light on the body and in the suitcase. Pintucks, lace trims and soft embroidery bring plenty of detail without asking for much styling.

Add beaded jewellery, leather sandals and a woven bag, then wear it again with trainers and an open shirt. Same dress, completely different plan.

Two Pieces, More Possibilities

A co-ord is very good at making a small suitcase feel much more impressive. Wear a linen-blend matching set for a slow morning or old-town wander, then pair the top with denim shorts and style the bottoms with a simple vest. A dressier skirt set works the same way, with both pieces reunited for dinner.

“Think about how each piece works beyond the original outfit. If you can immediately imagine three ways to wear it, it's has earned its place in the suitcase.”

The Short List

Denim shorts are the unsung hero of the holiday wardrobe. All they need is a milkmaid top, racer vest or oversized shirt and they’re ready for wherever the day goes next.

Choose relaxed jorts with trainers for sightseeing or a shorter pair with sandals when the temperature climbs. Add a soft boho top for later and the shorts that spent the afternoon beside the sea are ready for dinner.

They may be called shorts, but they’ll be putting in long hours.

Off Duty, On Repeat

For early starts, travel days and walks that become much longer than planned, pack one outfit built around comfort.
Sports-inspired shorts, a tank top and a cap make an easy holiday look for exploring or heading down to the water. Add an oversized shirt when you want more coverage and keep trainers on for days with serious step-count potential.

Every piece works separately too, which is exactly the point.

Swimwear, Beyond the Water

The best thing about swimwear? It doesn’t have to stay beside the pool.

Wear a bikini top with a flowing skirt and an open shirt, or style a swimsuit like a bodysuit with linen-blend shorts. Add sandals and a woven bag, and the outfit can go from sunrise swim to lunch without requiring a return to the room.

Dress Up

A special dinner, destination wedding or one very good reservation calls for a dress that feels noticeably more dressed up than the rest of your holiday wardrobe. Fluid satin is light to pack but makes an impact, while a statement neckline means you can keep the accessories simple.

Add a compact shoulder bag, gold-tone jewellery and heels if they’re essential. Otherwise, a polished flat sandal works just as well and is far more likely to be worn again.

Two-Shoe Rule

Shoes are where sensible packing can quickly unravel. Take comfortable trainers for travelling and exploring, plus one pair of sandals for the beach, lunch and evening plans. Leather flip-flops, thong-toe sandals or woven flats will work with almost every holiday outfit in the case.

If heels are an absolute must, choose one low pair that works with more than one dress. Then close the suitcase before another shoe can make its case.

Finish with sunny accessories that work just as hard: a raffia bag, sunhat, cap, sunglasses and jewellery that can change the mood of an outfit you’ve already worn.

Your Holiday Outfit Questions, Answered

Choose pieces that work in at least three outfits and keep to a loose colour palette. One sundress, a co-ord, denim shorts, a vest, an oversized shirt and swimwear can create more combinations than you might think.

Try a midi dress with flat sandals, a co-ord worn together or denim shorts with a soft blouse. Add jewellery and swap your daytime tote for a smaller bag when evening plans appear.

Take comfortable trainers and one versatile pair of sandals. If your plans genuinely require heels, choose a low pair that works with more than one outfit.

Style swimwear with linen-blend shorts, a flowing skirt, an oversized shirt or a lightweight sundress. Choose pieces that slip on easily and still feel considered away from the beach.
